The Breakers Environmental Policy

The Breakers strives to be a leader in our community in the promotion of sustainability and reduction of our environmental footprint. This can only be accomplished when the entire team adheres to the following policies designed to reduce our use of resources and properly recycles.

Team members must adhere to waste disposal and recycling guidelines established by The Breakers that require all employees to place waste materials into the proper containers.

Recycling Container Guide 

What goes in here? 

 

None

All items placed in this container should be loose and free of any food or liquid. 

  • Plastic bottles and containers (lids on; 2 gallons or less)
  • Food and beverage cans
  • Glass bottles and jars (lids off; no broken glass)
  • Milk and juice cartons (aseptic containers; lids on)
  • Drink boxes (lids on)
  • No plastic bags, broken glass, pouches or straws
None

All items placed in this container should be loose and free of any food stains.

  • Cardboard  
  • Flattened or boxes nested; all packing materials removed 
  • Newspapers and inserts   
  • Dry food and pizza boxes (no food stains) 
  • Cardboard paper rolls 
  • Office and school paper 
  • Mail 
  • Magazines 
  • Paper bags 
  • No plastic bags 

When in Doubt, Throw it Out 

If you are unsure if an item is recyclable, it is better to discard the item in the trash than contaminate other recyclable items in the bin.

Reminder: Plastic bags should never go in the blue or yellow bins. 

Waste  

The following items are commonly found in our recycling containers. They are not recyclable and should be thrown in the trash. 

  • Any type of plastic bag, plastic wrap or film
  • Potato chip type bags 
  • Foam products 
  • Aluminum foil or pans 
  • Napkins or paper towels 
  • Paper bowls, plates or paper drink cups 
  • Plastic utensils 
  • Straws 
  • Shredded paper 
  • Coat hangers 
  • Light bulbs 
  • Broken glass - must be discarded safely in accordance with departmental guidelines  

Where does it go?

How recycling works at The Breakers:

  1. Recycling is collected property-wide via small bins
  2. Small bins are collected and deposited into larger, wheeled bins
  3. All wheeled bins are brought to the collection area at Pinewalk West
  4. The Solid Waste Authority (SWA) of Palm Beach County picks up weekly
  5. Explore the SWA Recycling Center

Breakaway Marketplace

The following items are commonly found at the Breakaway Marketplace:

Trash

  • Paper plate
  • Paper bowl
  • Paper clamshell
  • Paper cups
  • Napkins
  • Plastic utensils
  • Straws
  • Coffee stirrers
  • All snack bags and wrappers
     

Recycle – Blue Bin

  • Clear plastic bowl top
  • Plastic cup lids
  • Plastic condiment cups and tops
  • Clear plastic clamshells
  • Plastic drink bottles
  • Aluminum drink cans
  • Drink cartons (coconut milk)
     

Recycle – Yellow Bin

  • Coffee cup sleeves (yellow bin)

SWA Resources  

Recycling is handled locally by the Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach County.
