Juan Gomez

Master Sommelier at The Breakers Palm Beach

Biography

Juan Gomez serves as Master Sommelier at The Breakers, one of America’s most iconic independent luxury resorts, and its acclaimed restaurant, HMF. In this role, he oversees the procurement of the resort's extensive 55,000-bottle wine collection, which supports 10 restaurants, in-room dining and large-scale banquet operations.  He also leads beverage education and training for the team, bringing a deep commitment to excellence and a refined approach to hospitality.

A daily presence on the floor, Gomez shares his expertise by thoughtfully guiding guests, clients and club members through curated wine experiences at HMF, which features more than 2,200 wine selections showcased in the venue's signature 3,000-bottle Wine Wall. He also is a key contributor to the restaurant's Wine Spectator Grand Award-winning list - an honor held since the recognition's inception in 1981.

Gomez began his career at The Breakers in 1999 as a server, where he quickly advanced through the restaurant operations division. In 2001, he enrolled in an exclusive wine class at the resort, where his talent quickly caught the attention of Virginia Philip, Master Sommelier and Wine Director. Under Philip's mentorship, Gomez passed the Advanced Sommelier exam on his first attempt in 2003 and repeated that success in 2007 when he achieved the coveted Master Sommelier credential - the highest distinction in the industry - completing the entire process in just six years. This achievement is especially meaningful as Gomez is the first and only Mexican national to attain this elite designation, marking a significant milestone in the wine world.

Originally from Campeche and raised in Mexico City, Gomez earned his Bachelor of Science Degree from Florida International University in Miami. He remains dedicated to education, returning to Mexico City each year to teach and mentor aspiring sommeliers, sharing his story and expertise to inspire the next generation of industry professionals.
