Ken Thompson

Director of Tennis at The Breakers

Biography

Ken Thompson is the Director of Tennis at The Breakers Palm Beach, a legendary oceanfront resort renowned for its world-class amenities and commitment to service excellence. For nearly four decades, Thompson has led all aspects of the 140-acre property’s tennis program - from operations and instruction to event execution - delivering exceptional experiences for guests and club members.

Since joining The Breakers in 1987, Thompson has played a key role in shaping and expanding the resort’s racquet sport offerings to meet the evolving interests of its global clientele. He oversees a team of 25, including 14 USTA/PTR-certified tennis professionals with an average tenure of 12 years. Their expert coaching, genuine hospitality, and ability to build lasting relationships continue to set The Breakers apart from other traditional clubs.

Thompson’s passion for racquet sports spans generations, having coached longstanding club members and their families. Whether delivering advanced instruction or enjoying a friendly rally, he is deeply committed to player development and team leadership. These connections, and the sense of community they create, remain the most rewarding aspects of his career.

In 2024, Thompson spearheaded the debut of The Breakers’ state-of-the-art racquet complex. The facility now features 16 open-air courts with three unique playing surfaces for tennis - hydroponic grass, clay hydro and cushioned hardtop - along with two pickleball and two padel courts. Enhanced with shaded coverings, comfort stations, a stretching deck, and veranda, the center elevates the luxury destination’s recreational experience to a new level.

Originally from northeast Oklahoma, Thompson was a two-time state high school tennis champion. After a severe back injury cut his college playing career short at Oklahoma State University, he pivoted from competition to coaching. With encouragement from his mother, he relocated to Palm Beach where he quickly earned a place on The Breakers team.

Beyond the court, Thompson remains dedicated to giving back. He serves on the board of  First Serve Palm Beach, a nonprofit that empowers youth through education, life skills training and mentorship. He also previously served on the board of  JDRF for 10 years.
